We have long hours to clock, workouts to complete, and hard-core sleep and mental restoration to do before we turn around and do it all over again. We always have many competing interests for our time. 

The truth about money is that TIME IN THE MARKET beats timing the market. The only person we cheat by not taking the time to do this today is ourselves. In just one month you will have put the work in to make managing your money take you about 1 hour a month for the rest of your life. Think about it… that can shave off years, maybe 20+, of time you have to work to survive. Who doesn’t have the time for this? 

You can use your nursing skills to keep a person alive for goodness sakes! You definitely have all the smarts it takes to manage your money. You may not have learned this in school or from your family, but that’s no reason you cannot learn it now. You already have everything it takes, you just need a roadmap and that’s what I’m giving you.

Nurses who feel strapped for time and lacking knowledge usually either 1) do nothing or 2) hire a financial advisor. But stop right there…I want you to avoid the mistake I made and save your money. Please don’t lose hundreds of thousands ++ of dollars to a financial advisors like I did. Here's what I know now:

No one will manage your money as well as you do.

• Only you truly understand your financial goals and how they change week to week, month to month, and year to year. 
• An advisor will meet with you for an hour every 1-2 years and that’s not enough for them to keep on top of the regular adjustments you need to maximize your wealth plan.
• Only you take your risk tolerance and risk capacity to heart. Your feelings about money are different from your advisor’s.
• It’s unrealistic to expect someone with whom you have such little contact to be intimately familiar with your regularly changing financial goals. 
• Only you can adjust your investments in real time based on your regularly changing life circumstances. 

Advisors act as gatekeepers between you and your money and this is a non-productive use of your time.

• Advisors commonly require phone calls to confirm transactions.
• If you’re married, an advisor may even require approval of your spouse which requires additional calls and contacts. True story... this happened to me all the time.
• If your advisor is out of the office and you need to access your money or want to make a major change or withdrawal, you may experience a delay.
• They are human therefore communication errors happen and these errors sometimes lead to big profit loss.

Advisors often miss the mark investing your money in ways you would approve.

• Entrusting your money to an advisor who does not have an intimate understanding about you and your regularly changing goals means that your money is 
• Getting invested in ways that don’t align with your personal goals and values.
• Is not getting invested when you expect it to be.
• Invest clients in high fee funds – industry average is 1% for advisor managed funds compared to  0% - 0.1% for self managed funds. This may not sound like a lot, but when you do the math, you can see how it's easy to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars on your investments. This is how they can sell their service as ‘free’ but still make large profits. 
• An advisor’s job is to get you to invest your money in their bank and then make money off your money. 
• Advisors are known to sell junk investments such as universal life insurance which is widely considered a bad investment. They do this because it’s a good money making scheme for them.

Nurses who work with advisors report

• NOT saving time since they have to KEEP WORKing more years to make up the amount of money that they passively pay to the advisor and lose in returns;
• Not getting educated since they are reliant on their advisor’s expertise. The advisor's relies on client ignorance to retain their customer. An advisor isn’t motivated to educate the nurses who they serve because in doing so they will lose a client. 
• Worse long-term outcomes for wealth building. 

Yes it’s true. Everything you need to know about money management is freely accessible in our world now. It’s definitely an option to get advice from colleagues, friends, and family-although what’s trustworthy is much more difficult to discern. But yes, you can verify it by reading personal finance books, following finfluencers for random tips, watching YouTube, asking for free advice from peers in online forums, and maybe also listening to the news and following the markets. You may also be tempted to take the ‘free advice’ from a financial advisor which you learn much later isn’t free at all! 

This piece-meal approach commonly leads you to follow fads and latest advice, invest in high risk stocks that don’t align with your personal risk tolerance leading you to be uncomfortable with investing - a red flag! 🚩

This leads to scams as you try to find an effective investment strategy while sifting through all the information at your fingertips.
